🌟 Stars of the Week: Nathan and Nyra
Nathan and Nyra worked excellently in DT when we created a moving lever mechanism using a split pin.We painted a vibrant background using watercolours and designed a lever so it looked like a giraffe was munching leaves from a tall tree.Â
This Week in Class 1
This term in DT, our class has been diving into the exciting world of mechanisms as part of our topic: Moving Pictures. We’ve been learning how different mechanisms—such as levers, sliders, and wheels—can be used to make static images come to life!
So far, we’ve been exploring how levers and split pins can create movement in pictures. The children have been following step-by-step instructions to carefully assemble their own simple moving parts. One of our favourite activities was creating a scene where a giraffe’s head could move up and down to eat from a tree! This was done using a split pin as the pivot, allowing the head to move like a real lever. The children drew and painted backgrounds for their scenes before attaching their moving parts, combining art and engineering beautifully.
The children have been so enthusiastic about this topic, and it’s been wonderful to see them experimenting, problem-solving, and reflecting on how their mechanisms work. We have also spent time looking at real-world examples of levers and other mechanisms in books, toys, and everyday objects like door handles.Â
Before the end of term, we are working towards an exciting goal: creating our very own moving picture storybooks! The children will plan, design, and build their own interactive stories using the skills they’ve developed.Â
